Ungyō is one half of two fierce protectors (known as Nio, or Benevolent Kings) standing guard at a Buddhist temple and shrine’s entrance. Opposite to his counterpart, Agyō who stands menacingly with his mouth open representing birth and the first sound of creation, Ungyō stands with his mouth closed, representing the completion of all things.
