“Cats are, so to speak, small animals that live in the palm of a person's hand. People feel joy in their relationship with these animals, sometimes competing on equal terms with them and sometimes being dominated by them. They enjoy the pride of cats and laugh at their occasional blunders, covering their mouths so as not to hurt their pride. And enjoying this unique relationship between humans and cats in the paintings is the way to appreciate Kuniyoshi's cats, and perhaps this is also how to read into the relationship between the artist Kuniyoshi and his cats."
